AXA Diaries: Meet Amy

Hi, I’m Amy and I’m a trainee fleet underwriter at AXA UK. I’m new to the insurance industry, and this is my experience so far...
What do you do in your role?
As I’m new to the insurance industry, so I’m currently learning the fundamentals of Insurance Underwriting. I’m building my knowledge daily by supporting the experienced Underwriters in my team and contributing to the Underwriting process by building strong relationships with brokers, completing mid-term adjustments to fleet policies and preparing/executing renewal terms. I’m also acquiring knowledge of the Insurance Market, the products we offer and becoming familiar with risk assessment techniques.
I’m also currently working towards acquiring my Certificate in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute. Something AXA is fully supporting me with achieving.
What’s your favourite part about your role?
My favourite part is meeting the brokers. I think this is a key part of my role as laying the foundations for strong relationships is paramount to obtaining and retaining new and existing business.
What’s your favourite part about working with your team?
My team are so friendly and supportive. They encourage me to ask questions no matter how silly I think they might be. They’ve made being brand new to Insurance much less daunting by welcoming me in and providing continuous encouragement. I appreciate the time and effort they put into helping me understand policies and processes even when they are very busy.
The banter and the supportive attitude from everyone. I think it’s rare to come across a team where everyone is approachable. I always look forward to my office days as I get to chat to everyone and build relationships with my team.
There’s a stereotype that working in insurance is boring. How does your experience at AXA compare?
My experience at AXA hasn’t been boring whatsoever. There’s always something going on, like broker events, darts nights for drinks and friendly competition, team charity events and Chartered Insurance Institute dinners. There’s always an opportunity to connect with my team and brokers. The learning aspect is also enjoyable with opportunities to visit sites for a Risk Management Survey or visiting Lloyds of London – a global insurance and reinsurance marketplace. No day is the same, which keeps things fresh and interesting.
Would you recommend a career at AXA?
Definitely. The career development opportunities, the office culture and the focus on colleague wellbeing is second to none. I feel that AXA is constantly focussing on how to make their employees happy through benefits like free private healthcare, extended maternity leave and their benefits portal where you can get discounts just about everywhere.
