Job overview:

The London Commercial Team, specialise in Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate programmes across Property, Casualty, Construction and Motor Fleet. Our key broking partners include Global, National and Independent specialists, most of which operate in the diverse ‘square mile’ area. We ‘re currently looking to strengthen the team and bring to market the opportunity to join us a Commercial Fleet Underwriter, specialising in Existing Business. As a fleet underwriter you’ll deliver on the trading team targets through profitable underwriting of fleet risks within agreed authority levels, whilst developing key broker relationships in line with branch objectives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Underwrite existing business profitably and accurately, adhering to established practices and governance using available appetite and tools.
  • Gather information, understand policy wordings, industry trends, and assess risks to determine appropriate premiums based on technical pricing.
  • Develop credibility with brokers and customers through effective questioning, understanding their needs, and designing tailored solutions.
  • Build influential relationships externally and internally, responding promptly to broker demands and keeping them informed of relevant activities.
  • Strengthen trading relationships with brokers via visits and large case management to maximize financial results.
  • Establish yourself as a trading expert, collaborating with intermediaries and engaging with the Underwriting Technical Centre to build confidence.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with brokers and clients to showcase AXA’s capabilities and secure new business opportunities.
  • Support loss ratio management by implementing underwriting controls, investigating poorly performing accounts, and increasing retention through targeted actions.

Work arrangements:

At AXA we work smart, empowering our people to balance their time between home and the office in a way that works best for them, their team, and our customers. You'll work at least 60% of your week away from home, at our office location in London, visiting clients or attending industry events. Your skills & experience:

  • Strong technical commercial fleet underwriting expertise in a composite insurance environment.
  • Demonstrates strong trading capability, including commercial awareness, negotiation skills, and the ability to build and maintain robust broker relationships.
  • Pragmatic and confident decision-maker with good numerical reasoning and analytical skills, experienced in account monitoring and action planning.
  • Sound knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for insurance, including treating customers fairly, and a good understanding of the commercial fleet insurance market.
  • Good organisation and planning skills, enabling effective workload management and strategic decision-making.
  • Proven experience in risk evaluation, with the ability to develop and implement effective risk management strategies.
  • Capable of building credibility and trust with brokers and clients through professional communication and technical expertise.
  • Cert CII / DIP qualifications are desirable.

As a precondition of employment for this role, you must be eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.

This position has been defined as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime which means that in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will be subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years.
