History of Sun Alliance

Although the AXA name first emerged in 1985, our history goes back a whole lot further.

Parts of our heritage can be traced to twentieth century companies such as the Provincial Insurance Company and Royal Exchange Group. Other predecessors include Equity & Law (founded in 1844), Guardian Assurance (1821), Ancienne Mutuelle (1817) and Sun Life (1810). The earliest constituent business – Royal Exchange Assurance – was founded in 1720, when George I was King of England.

We're proud of our history, which brings us deeper knowledge and experience of the insurance market than any of our competitors. Wherever possible, we apply what we’ve learned in the past when developing our strategy for the future.
